Creative use of color can transform the impact of a painting whatever medium is used. "Color is one of the elements of art that can make or break a painting," artist Pat Dobrinska says. "Through the creative use of color, you can achieve an uplifting, serene, exciting, sad, compelling or interesting painting."

Dobrinska will return to School of the Arts at Rhinelander July 19 to 23 to demonstrate this element of art in her class Fantastic Color for Painters. She will also reprise her previously offered class Plein-Air Drawing and Painting: Landscapes and Buildings this year. Dobrinska has worked professionally in various media including watercolor, oils and pastels for some 40 years, specializing in portraits and landscapes.

Plein-Air is a French expression for "in the open air." Students in this class, which is recommended for intermediate to advanced students, will move out of the classroom into the Rhinelander area in search of appropriate subjects. Color will affect the paintings produced by these students.

"Color, along with value (light to dark), affects the total mood and purpose of a painting," Dobrinska says. "If your colors are muted, what we call neutralized, the mood of the painting is quieter and more somber. You would encounter neutral colors when the sun is not out; on a cloudy, winter day; a rainy day; a misty or foggy day; or at twilight."

"A sunny day, whatever the season, would have greater contrast in value and brighter, purer colors where the sun shines through."

Color can also express the mood of the artist, she adds. "A more energetic painting would use mostly warmer colors: yellows, oranges and reds, and a quiet painting would use mostly cool colors: greens, blues, and violets. If an artist enjoys contemporary colors, brighter colors with more of a punch would be used."

"Everyone is attracted to a different palette (colors), and learning how, when and why to use them is the purpose of the Fantastic Color course."

Proper application of color is only part of the emphasis in the plein-air class. "In Plein-Air Drawing and Painting, we will study perspective in landscapes and buildings and learn the techniques, theories and methods in creating believable, compelling paintings. We will head outdoors to paint at different, beautiful sites," she says.

Fantastic Color for Painters is offered Saturday through Wednesday, July 19 to 23, from 1:30 to 4:45 p.m. Plein-Air Drawing and Painting: Landscapes and Buildings is offered is offered in two formats: Saturday and Sunday, July 19 and 20, from 8:30 to 11:45 a.m. and Saturday through Wednesday, July 19 to 23, from 8:30 to 11:45 a.m.
