Nearly 50 students from Rhinelander High School are preparing for a very important test - the Trig-Star exam - they will take April 22.

This is the second year the Trig-Star exam has been offered to RHS students.

"It's a very involved exam using trigonometry and geometry," said Tony Jones, licensed professional land surveyor and Trig-Star coordinator.

Only those students who have completed trigonometry and geometry are eligible to take the test. Approximately 48 Rhinelander students will take the exam, most of them juniors and seniors.

The students have an hour to complete the test and will not learn their scores until the following week.

The local winner will advance to the state level. The winner of the state competition will have to take a new test to advance to the national level.

"Some of [the students] are really excited about it," said teacher Renee Kozlowski.

The top three winners at the local level will receive $60, $25 and $15 respectively. The first-place winner will also receive a plaque.

At the state level the top three students will receive $500, $250 and $100 respectively. The first-place winner will also win a three-night stay at the Kalahari Resort in the Wisconsin Dells.

The winner at the national level will receive $2,000.

There are 14 practice tests available and the Rhinelander students are taking advantage of the practice time.

"Some of the students have done all seven and are bound and determined to get every one of them correct," Kozlowski said.

Jones, who gave a presentation on the exam Tuesday, likes that Trig-Star shows students that what they are learning has a purpose.

"It answers the question: When am I going to use this? Mathematics is everywhere not just surveying and engineering but architecture, and in the world of business and accounting," Jones said. "This is the one time when we get to showcase why we use math for what we do as land surveyors."
