Dr. Jeff Borchardt, owner and operator of Beyond Martial Arts, has recently completed a 225-hour training course in Holy Yoga taught by Brooke Boon, the founder of the discipline.
Borchardt said he searched for Boon's website and took the class because he felt that something was missing in yoga and had heard people claim it was anti-Christian.
According to Borchardt, the anti-Christian claims stem from the fact that when Hindus practice yoga they empty their heart and mind to worship their many gods, while the Bible tells Christians to never empty their mind and heart, to always keep God with them.
"Holy Yoga's philosophy is that we don't empty our mind, that we keep our mind and our heart on God and Jesus and we worship him through our movement," Borchardt said.
After studying the differences between the two yogas he signed up for the 225-hour training course.
"It's not about the yoga it's about bringing people to their own belief, their own God, on the mat and worshiping using your body," he said.
Most nights there isn't a dry eye in the house during Holy yoga sessions, Borchardt said. A lot of people feel a connection when they are participating in Holy Yoga, he noted.
The spacious Holy Yoga room at Beyond Martial Arts was designed with calming effects in mind. It has a fireplace, hardwood floors and calming green walls.
People come from as far away as Crandon and Wausau to participate in Holy Yoga classes at Beyond Martial Arts.
"It doesn't matter what denomination you are from, we don't even care if you are a believer or not a believer, it's open to anybody and everybody and there is no judgement," Borchardt said.
Every Holy Yoga class is by donation. There is no fee and everyone is welcome to come.
Classes are taught on Sundays and Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. Prayers are offered at the beginning and end of each class and Christian music plays throughout the session.
Holy Yoga is not limited to adults, children can participate in the Wednesday and Sunday classes. Starting in May, there will also be a Holy Yoga class for children on Saturday.
Upon request, Borchardt will go to other locations to teach Holy Yoga.
In the fall, he will advance his training through the master instructor program.
