The founder of the Rhinelander Woman's Club, Clara Brown, helped start the city's first library in 1898 in a room of what is now BMO Harris Bank. That's why, to this day, the club maintains a strong interest in supporting the Rhinelander District Library.

On Tuesday, two representatives from the club presented library officials with a check for $1,000. The money is being divided between the children's department and the library's senior outreach program.

"We're going to put it toward books," said Tom Hurlburt, children's librarian. He said a nameplate will be put in each book identifying it as a purchase that was made possible by the Woman's Club.

Library Director Ed Hughes said the portion of the donation going toward the senior outreach program will help purchase CD players that people can use to listen to audiobooks.

"With the senior outreach program we do a lot of purchasing of materials and deliveries to places like nursing homes," he said. "A lot of the materials are large-print and audiobooks. With the CD players, people will be able to check one of them out with their audiobook."
