School District of Rhinelander conducts health and safety training
Recently, 33 staff members participated in the annual American Heart Association First Aid, CPR, AED training. The School District of Rhineland-er has been doing annual training for years and has developed building responder teams in each school since 2003.
The training is offered annually and the certification is good for two years. School Administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals and coaches have participated in this offering and do it on a rotating basis to keep their certification up to date.
Topics included basic first aid, sudden cardiac arrest, allergic reactions, diabetes and low blood sugar, seizure, shock, head, neck and spine injuries, sprains, asthma, burns, CPR and AED/Automated External Defibrillator use.
Each school building in the School District of Rhinelander has an AED. Having trained staff to utilize the devices in the event of an emergency is paramount. There is also an AED at the Ced A. Vig Outdoor Classroom (CAVOC). The success of the program is dependent on trained staff and public awareness. It is important to know where the AEDs are located at your child's school. The next time you are in a school building, please take a look and recognize the location of the AED. Public Access and awareness is critical.
The school district partners with Nicolet College training center in order to have the appropriate trainer to student ratio that is required by the American Heart Association. Trainers for this session included: Dale Wege, Phillip Hazelquist, Linda Novak and School District RN, Kerri Schmidt.
