The school received the honor from the Wisconsin RtI (Response to Intervention) Center.
The Schools of Distinction and Merit programs separately recognize schools that have made achievements in enacting Response to Intervention frameworks for academics and for behavior, using Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
"We were named a School of Distinction in the state. There were Schools of Merit and Schools of Distinction, with distinction being the higher honor, and what that means is that the practices that we are implementing, all of that was recognized by the state as being really exceptional," Crescent Principal Kelly Huseby said.
The celebration included a visit from the Hodag mascot, a performance from the Rhinelander High School band, and a school-wide conga line around the gym as teachers and students displayed the School of Distinction banner.
The students also spent part of their afternoon learning or relearning the PBIS initiatives they'll be working under.
"Today, we did a matrix walk where we went through all of our Four B's - be respectful, be safe, be here, and be responsible - all afternoon. We wanted to reiterate for the kids all of the things we are doing around rewarding positive behavior," Huseby said.
After that, it was time for fun.
"This is our kick-off today. We had our matrix walk activities and then we just wanted to have a big kick-off for the kids to keep learning about the initiatives but also have some fun with it as well. We got the Hodag to come in, the band is here, and we're going to unveil the banner and just have a nice, big celebration," Huseby said.
