Tara Johnson knew she wanted to return to college. Taking the step to actually enroll, however, was something that eluded her for a number of years.

The desire was definitely there. "But I had a lot of questions that I didn't really know how to get answers to and that was holding me back," she said.

Then one day she saw a flier for a Returning to Learning open house at Nicolet College. She decided to attend.

"For whatever reason, I was really nervous walking in," Johnson said. "Maybe it was all of the unknowns, but within minutes of being there all of that nervousness went away. Everybody was so nice and so friendly and helpful."

Nicolet will hold its next Returning to Learning open house from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 30, in the Northwoods Center on the Nicolet Campus.

With her eyes set on becoming a registered nurse, Johnson started classes this past January and things are going well for her. She's getting good grades and her family has made the adjustment that mom is now a college student.

"Coming to Nicolet was absolutely the right decision. It was right for me and right for my family," she said. "Not being a student of typical college age can be quite intimidating. That's understandable. But once you see others there just like you, and how friendly and helpful everyone is, you really begin to realize you are at the right place and taking that important first step to getting a college education."

During the event people can drop by anytime between 5 and 7 p.m. to learn about a wide variety of topics. These include how to enroll; pay for college; balance school, work and family; determine what to study, and talk with instructors and staff from the college's different academic areas.

Nicolet will also waive the $30 application fee for all people filling out an application for admission that evening.

Nicolet offers 75 different academic credentials in 14 broad academic fields. The credentials range from short-term certificates to two-year associate degrees. The college also has more than 70 credit transfer agreements with four-year campuses for those with their sights set on earning a bachelor's degree. These transfer agreements are with every campus in the University of Wisconsin System and several private colleges and universities.
