Lemmens: Clinic aims to make 'better coaches' at youth level

Rhinelander High School boys' basketball coach Derek Lemmens believes quality coaching is vital well before student-athletes reach the varsity level and he's ready to offer advice.

Lemmens and other RHS varsity coaches will host a pair of youth coaching clinics this month at RHS. The first will be held Monday and the second Oct. 24. Both sessions will start at 5:30 p.m. and be will held in the Superior Diesel Advanced Learning Center.

Lemmens said the clinics, offered through the School District of Rhinelander's Community Education Program, are aimed toward current youth coaches and those who want to coach at the youth level.

"I notice that there are just some things that I feel, when it comes to teaching kids this these days, I don't think everyone who is coaching and volunteering necessarily knows," Lemmens said. "I think there are some things that we could be doing a better job, as varsity coaches, of informing those people what those expectations are and helping them to make them better coaches.

"I've also heard people say things like, 'I really want to (coach), but I really don't even know what I'm doing.' Then I (think to) myself there are probably a lot of people out there that want to be involved and are worried that they don't know what to do. I thought that this would be a nice way to try to give them an idea of what they can do as a coach."

SDR Community Education Coordinator Mike Cheslock said the aim is to improve sports, as a whole, in Rhinelander.

"(Lemmens) saw a need to develop some youth coaches and get everyone on the same page so we have quality youth programs here in the Rhinelander community," he said.

Lemmens said the format for the clinics will primarily be discussion and question and answer. A wide range of topics will be discussed.

"We're going to be talking about injury prevention and some of the laws - which with the NFL and things like that, have become a big deal in athletics," he said. "We'll also talk about teaching methods, what are ways we can teach kids things that they'll remember and be able to apply. We're going to talk about, as a coach, how you are a representative of your community and how being professional, your attire and all those little things make a big difference.

"My hope is to go through the PowerPoint and while that's happening, there are questions and discussions. I'd like to see all of that done."

So far, Cheslock said, he's been pleased with preregistration for Monday's clinic.

"We have about nine right now for that and we're looking for more," he said.

Though not required, Cheslock strongly encourages those who wish to participate to contact the Community Education office at (715) 365-9745 to register ahead of time. The clinics are being offered free of charge.
