The Nicolet College Foundation recently received a $10,000 donation from Districts Mutual Insurance (DMI), which provides insurance coverage to Nicolet and the 15 other colleges in the Wisconsin Technical College System.

Ten years ago the colleges collaborated to form a municipal mutual insurance company as a means to cut costs through self-funded insurance. DMI offers a menu of insurance and risk management services and solutions tailored to the delivery of vocational, technical, and adult education.

"That the company was able to make such a generous donation says a lot about how the 16 colleges have been able to cooperatively manage risk and limit claims," said Nicolet Vice President of Finance and College Operations Roxanne Lutgen.

Over the years the company said the colleges have collectively been able to save more than $10 million in premium costs.

In the past, Districts Mutual would typically donate $1,000 annually to each state technical college foundation. This year, each foundation at the 16 colleges received a $10,000 donation.

"This donation commemorates our 10th year of operations and also serves as a tangible benefit of being a member of DMI - a company whose primary focus is on the needs of its members," said Steve Stoeger-Moore, DMI executive vice president and chief operating officer.

The insurer designated the funds as unrestricted, giving each foundation the flexibility to use the donation as they best see fit.

DMI was formed in 2004 through a collaboration that moved the colleges from merely buying an insurance policy to forming their own insurance company. DMI member colleges participate in an integrated approach to risk management that includes insurance coverage, loss control, claims management, campus security, and environmental health and safety.

In total, the company insures $3.3 billion in property and contents at the 16 technical colleges in the state system which educates the full-time equivalent of 78,228 students annually.
