RHS Alumni Basketball Tournament fast approaching
By Cassie Krueger-
The tournament, sponsored by HodagSports.com, is set for Saturday, Dec. 22 and will take place at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
"A lot of the same guys are coming back as last year, so it will be a lot of fun," said tournament coordinator Brandon Karaba, a member of the RHS class of 2001.
Games are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday and the championship is expected to begin between 3 and 4 p.m. Space is available for up to eight teams to participate in the tournament. Karaba said five to six teams have already expressed interest in playing.
There is no entry fee to play, however a $5 contribution is greatly appreciated for the post-tournament gathering that will take place at Bucketheads Sports Bar downtown.
"My guess is we will still get to that eight (team) mark so we still have some space yet," said Karaba.
The tournament started the year Karaba graduated high school and was originally organized by Mike Cheslock. After Cheslock stepped down, Karaba decided to try his hand at running the event.
Karaba said he is excited to continue this tradition and to be a part of such a light-hearted event that allows former players to compete and reconnect.
The night before the alumni tournament the RHS boys' basketball team will be take on Wausau West at the Miazga Gym in the first coaching clash of RHS grads.
First-year Wausau West coach Nate Lemmens will be coaching his team against older brother Derek's Hodags. With several Rhinelander natives back in town for the alumni tournament and the holidays, Karaba said it will be a great way to kick of the 2013 Alumni Tournament.
"So you will have brothers coaching against each other Friday night and then Saturday they will be playing with each other in the tournament," he said.
Teams or individuals may register until Dec. 6. For more information, email Karaba at [email protected].
