Students in Jenny Prom and Jesse Richter's second-grade classes at Crescent Elementary School were vying for the record books Thursday.

The students participated in the Guinness World Record Sport Stacking Event.

The 29 second graders from Rhinelander joined people in 37,000 other schools (in 46 countries) in the effort to get the most people Sport Cup stacking at multiple locations in one day.

"People from all around the world are coming together in groups of 25 or more to beat the world record for the most people stacking cups at multiple locations," Prom explained.

Last year, students in Prom's fourth-grade class used cup stacking as a brain stimulation exercise. Now that Prom is teaching second grade, the stacking followed her.

"We did cup stacking in my classroom last year with my fourth graders and we decided to try it with my second graders this year - since I moved to second grade," Prom said. "We practiced on Tuesday and the kids loved it. It helps them use both sides of their brain, so they're working on sequencing and patterns for math and reading. It also helps them, because they have to use their right and left hands, it helps them with sports and musical instruments. Plus, they love the idea of breaking a record. It's pretty neat."

Even if the record isn't broken every year, Prom said she will continue the stacking project in her classroom as a learning tool and a fun reward for good behavior.

"I really like it and I like being able to use it as a reward for students on green, which is part of our behavior plan. It's a reward, but it's also something that applies to their learning as well as it promotes eye-hand coordination, concentration, speed-on-task, use of both hands, and use of both sides of the brain," she said.

The students were clearly enjoyed themselves as they worked to stack the cups as quickly as possible. Several exclaimed just how "cool" and "awesome" it was to beat a world record.
