Connecting to our community by serving

Connecting to our community by serving

By By Paul E. Johnson-

At James Williams Middle School, one of our most rewarding events is our annual Veterans Day Program. We recently held our 43rd annual event. This event is an opportunity to thank our veterans but it is also a chance to serve our community. I have also learned that the Veterans Day Ceremony is about building meaningful relationships. Over the last nine years, the program has afforded me the opportunity to develop lasting friendships with many local veterans. We talk throughout the year, reflecting on the programs from previous years and planning new ideas to provide a program that they feel a part of. These behind-the-scenes conversations and planning have forged a lasting partnership in education.

Each year, we look for a way to deliver a different message to our community and our veterans. This year's theme was "Valor, Courage & Sacrifice." Our keynote speakers were two former students at James Williams Middle School. David Chrisinger was our first speaker. He shared his story of friendship and support for classmate Brett Foley, who served in the Marines upon graduation from high school. David was a guide for Brett with challenges in coming back home after serving in war and helped connect Brett to the organization The Mission Continues (http://missioncontinues.org). David and Brett committed to raising money for this program which helps veterans returning from service get acclimated back to civilian life with a newfound purpose. In late October, the two of them each successfully finished the Fall 50 in Door County, a 50 mile individual ultra-marathon. The duo set up a site to share their story and collect donations for the cause (http://running50.com/).

The Veterans Day ceremony is truly special. The Veterans Day Program provides a very authentic and teachable moment for our students. The speakers set the stage for students and veterans alike to make connections from their experiences to the lives of those listening in the audience. We have confident and articulate student emcees, our chorus delivered powerful words eloquently under the direction of Ms. Wattelet, and our bands performed inspiring patriotic pieces under the tutelage of Mrs. Piasecki and Mrs. Sexton. The talents of our students are put on display and they shine a bright ray of sunshine for our veterans on the day dedicated to them. After the celebration, our students in Mrs. Cirilli's family and consumer science education classes provide fabulous customer service to our community and veterans with an informal meal. Watching our students serve and interact with our community is a joy.

The Veterans Day Program is one way we as a school can give back to you as a community. It is also an opportunity for the community to witness the talents of our youth. We encourage you to join us next year on Nov. 11 at 8:30 a.m. for our Veterans Day program. We take pride connecting and serving our community as we continue our mission here at school to Secure the Future.
