On Wednesday, Nicolet College held a Culinary Open House, where visitors sampled food and saw Nicolet culinary students in action.

All high schools in the district were invited to the open house, and anyone from the community was welcome. The open house attracted visitors from outside the district as well.

"The open house is really a two-way type of program," said Kevin Brown, Nicolet culinary arts instructor. "It allows my students to show off some of their work, and it allows them to interact with potential students. We get between 100 to 150 area high school students coming to our open house, so they get to see what our program is like, interact with our students and ask student-to-student questions versus tour group questions, which is always good for kids thinking about coming to a school."

While the event was supervised by Nicolet staff members, the culinary students were largely in control of the open house.

"As an instructor, it's really good for me to see my students in this role because they are actually doing some teaching today," Brown said.

The Nicolet culinary students set up a buffet table filled with food they made themselves. Additionally, the kitchen was open for tours, so potential Nicolet culinary students could see the equipment they would use when enrolled. In the kitchen, Nicolet students put on demos about making pasta, decorating cakes and proper knife use, among many other things. The culinary students explained what they were making and often had visitors try it themselves.

"Really it's a recruiting event for students, but it's also to give people insight into what we do and what we have to offer," said Vicki Mendham, Nicolet culinary arts instructor.

In addition to touring the facilities and sampling the food prepared by Nicolet students, visitors were given a packet of information that gave them everything they needed to know about the culinary arts program offered at Nicolet - from tuition and scholarship information to application information and the culinary curriculum - should the visitors decide to apply to Nicolet.

As Mendham said, the event was a way to "give people a taste of what we do."
