The Oneida County District Attorney's office is pursuing first degree reckless homicide charges against Jennifer Heiting, 27, and Richard Lewis, 27, of St. Germain after recent toxicology results indicate 30-year-old David Stahl died of a heroin overdose in December.

Emergency officials responded to Stahl's town of Crescent home Dec. 10 after a 911 call reported his possible death. Law enforcement found two baggies with trace amounts of heroin next to the bed in Stahl's home. Heiting and Lewis were both arrested on drug charges as a result of the subsequent investigation.

According to the criminal complaint, Heiting and Lewis traveled to Stahl's house on Dec. 8 to pick up a package of heroin that was scheduled to be delivered via FedEx. In an interview with law enforcement, Heiting said the package contained approximately 30 bindles of heroin and Stahl was supposed to receive two bindles for signing for the package. Heiting had reportedly purchased approximately 142 grams of heroin from a source in Illinois since June 2012, according to the complaint.

Heiting has been incarcerated in the Oneida County jail since Dec. 11. The charges against her carry a maximum sentence of more than 100 years in prison.

Lewis has been incarcerated in the jail since Jan. 9. The charges against him carry a maximum prison sentence of more than 77 years.
