On Thursday, Nicolet College gave high school students the chance to see what it would be like to attend the Northwoods school. Participants were able to sit in on Nicolet courses as well as learn about the admission process at the college.

Erika Warning, Nicolet College career coach, led the potential Nicolet students through a presentation that outlined the educational and financial questions many have when considering their college options. Warning talked about the wide variety of academic possibilities that Nicolet offers, which include over 70 programs, from short-term certificate programs to one or two-year technical programs and a two-year university transfer program that guarantees transfer to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, among other colleges, when students meet the grade criteria and complete the program.

Warning also talked to the participants about the admissions process at Nicolet, including tests students must take to place them in the correct classes, such as the Accuplacer test.

One thing Warning stressed is that Nicolet has no grade requirements for admission. "We never say the door is closed here at Nicolet," Warning told the participants. "If your scores aren't where we need them to be to get you right into the program, we offer prep classes to build your skills, and even one-on-one tutoring." Warning went on to say that these extra programs are usually free for potential students.

Jill Price, Financial Aid Director at Nicolet, was also present to go over financial aid options. Price reiterated the importance of filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, and explained the different types of loans students could receive after filling out the form.

Heather Schallock, executive director of the Nicolet College Foundation, gave a presentation urging the potential collegians to apply for Nicolet scholarships, explaining that over 200 scholarships were available through the foundation based on academic merit as well as geography and field of study.

The participants were then given the chance to sit in during an actual Nicolet class. Students picked a class they were interested in order to get a feel for a potential career.

Jazmyn Wickkiser, one of the high school students in attendance, is interested in graphic design, and said that sitting in on a graphic design class was a helpful experience.

"The instructer explained everything really thoroughly, and went through everything step by step and it was easy to follow along," said Wickkiser. "I found it really interesting and fun."

High school student Angela Franer, who is interested in cosmetology, was able to attend a class and watch as Nicolet students practiced on cosmetology mannequins. She even volunteered her own head to give the students some live practice. "It was very nice and helpful," said Franer. "They gave me all the information I asked for."

Franer said the visit helped solidify her choice to pursue a cosmetology degree. The scalp massage she received from the Nicolet cosmetology students probably didn't hurt the cause, either.
