Upcoming summer kids classes at Nicolet College focus on exploration, fun, and learning new skills
Upcoming summer kids classes at Nicolet College focus on exploration, fun, and learning new skills

Parents looking for fun and educational activities for their children this summer have several options to pick from at Nicolet College.

All of the sessions will give youngsters opportunities to explore a wide variety of new activities and learn new skills along the way.

Options include:

College Camp

Northwoods sixth through eight graders will explore a wide variety of different careers at the perennial favorite College Camp Aug. 5 to 8 on the Nicolet Campus. Openings are still available in Engineering Your Future, Dramatic Arts, World Foods, Welding for Fun; Sew Fabulous Fashion, Slightly Singed Science, Cartooning, Passion for Painting, Wildlife Rehabilitation, Sport Medicine, and Fun with Fossils, among others.

Students will pick two classes. Each class will run for an hour and a half between 1 and 4:15 p.m. each day. Orientation on the first day, Monday, Aug. 5, will start at 12:30 p.m.

Transportation to and from the Nicolet Campus will be provided from Minocqua, Eagle River, Three Lakes and Sugar Camp areas. Cost is $75 for the four days and an additional $30 for transportation from the above areas. College Camp registration information is also available by calling Nicolet at (715) 365-4512.

Video Game Design

New this year will be two camps Aug. 19 to 22 devoted to video game development for kids age 10 to 15.

Students in Video Game Designers Wanted will learn how to create arcade-style games and how to control characters, objects and outcomes from 9 a.m. to noon in Northwoods Center 110.

In the afternoon session 1 to 4 p.m. in the same room, students in Alien Invaders Video Game Making will create computer-generated aliens that invade other planets. They'll also add features to their characters and learn how to modify difficulty levels. Cost for each session is $114.

Lego Camps in Minocqua

The popular Lego Camps will also return this summer with remaining sessions running July 29 to Aug. 1 on Nicolet's Lakeland Center in Minocqua.

The Junior Engineering 2 Camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon and have kids age 6 to 9 making a variety of contraptions such as ping pong ball throwers and Ferris wheels while utilizing a number of engineering concepts.

The Collision Cars Camp will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and have 10- to 13-year-olds building a variety of battling machines such as ArmBots and BladeBots while learning elements of theoretical risk-taking and engineering principles.

Cost for each Lego Camp is $122.

Teen Swing Dance

Another upcoming specialty camp is Teen Swing Dance for children ages 13 to 17, 3 to 4 p.m. July 22 to 25 in Rhinelander and 3 to 4 p.m., July 29 to Aug. 1 in Minocqua, $24.
