Swisher reflects on time with district

After two years with the School District of Rhinelander, Community Education Coordinator Kim Swisher is leaving to take a communications coordinator job with the Lac Du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

"I am sad to leave the district and my terrific coworkers, but I am intrigued by the challenge of communicating the tribe's news and am looking forward to this new position," she said. "The Lac Du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians has a strong desire to communicate with members, descendants, the surrounding communities, and the state. That is exciting to me, and I hope my skills and experience will serve the tribe well."

While she is looking forward to the challenges that await her in her new position, Swisher said she will miss working with the children of Rhinelander and being able to tell the community about the wonderful things they accomplish.

"I have truly enjoyed being around the children," she said. "My husband and I were not blessed with children, so the opportunity to get to know our students and their families has been a great experience for me. I will also miss sharing the good things happening in our classrooms, in our buildings and in our community. Sometimes it's easy to overlook the good when there are more pressing matters to deal with. It's been an honor to share class activities and student accomplishments with the entire community."

Swisher also said she will miss working with the community on the different classes she oversaw during her time, though she knows the program will be in good hands no matter who the district choses as her replacement.

"When I began my position, the goals of the Community Education Program were clearly defined - we will offer educational programs and activities for the community, we will create and maintain a trusting relationship with the community, and we will regularly communicate with citizens, organizations and businesses to gather information and input. I believe we've stayed true to our goals. We have offered a variety of classes, and have been consistent in our communications with our families and the community. The open houses, informational meetings and other community events we've hosted have provided excellent opportunities for community input, and I regularly receive emails and calls from residents. I feel our lines of communication have greatly improved, and I know that our incoming Superintendent Kelli Jacobi is committed to maintaining strong communication with our families, our staff and our community," Swisher said. "I am most grateful for the opportunity to serve the School District of Rhinelander students, families and community members. Our children are the future of our community, and I am very proud of the support our community showed in passing the recent referendum. The district is preparing to post my position and I am looking forward to assisting my successor with a smooth transition."
