Rhinelander Soccer Club U18s defeat Marshfield
Prep boys' soccer players use summer league as tune-up
Several members of next year's team, plus some who were seniors during the 2012 campaign kicked off play in the Central Wisconsin Soccer League Wednesday with a 6-2 victory over Marshfield at the Hanson Lake Soccer Complex in Rhinelander.
Three seniors-to-be - Sam Mueller, Nick Wright and Nate Tvedten - accounted for all the scoring.
The league, which includes teams from Wausau, Marshfield, Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point, Weston/Schofield and Eagle River, is just one way the team prepares for the upcoming season.
"As most coaches would tell you, out of season work is extremely important," RHS boys' soccer coach Dan Millot. "The opportunity to play, improve your skills, is every coach's wish for his players. We have a group of boys who (are) playing together this summer through the Rhinelander Soccer Club and our competitive program and they go up against other teams. Most of them they won't see during conference play, but teams that represent other (schools) whether they be in our sectional or regional."
John Wright oversees the squad during the summer for Millot, who is only allowed a handful of contact days with the team during the offseason.
Mueller scored twice for the Hodags in the first half under cloudy and damp conditions Wednesday. Wright and Tvedten added goals as the Hodags took a 4-0 lead at halftime. Wright tallied again and Mueller added another goal in the final minutes.
Senior-to-be Chris Hagen was the goalkeeper Wednesday night and allowed two second-half goals, one of which came on a penalty kick.
In addition to league play, the team will participate in a pair of tournaments over the summer, including one in Eau Claire this weekend.
"It's good to see how they compete against some of the larger communities like Wausau, Stevens Point (and) Marshfield. That's what it's all about," Millot said.
