The Hodag Quest was designed to model a similar event that takes place in Wausau, according to Judy May, the JWMS teacher who coordinated the event.
"I saw this article about what they were doing in Wausau, and I thought it would be really cool if we did it downtown here," said May.
The day began with the Hodag Quest, where students were grouped together and given folders with several tasks to be completed at the participating businesses. Each group visited around eight businesses over the course of the morning.
"It's kind of like 'The Amazing Race,' where they have a task at the business and have to complete it before moving on," said May.
The tasks ranged from completing a small project to asking questions to learn about the business they were visiting.
"The questions we created are curriculum-based and business-based," said May.
Questions were tailored to the specific businesses, so students could learn about the different services offered in Rhinelander, as well as some of the qualifications required for certain jobs.
Students completed tasks such as learning how to write a check at a bank and visiting a carpet store to figure out the area of a room to "purchase" the right amount of carpet.
At some places the students had to ask questions to learn about the institution, such as learning about the city of Rhinelander from Mayor Johns at City Hall and learning about the current exhibit at ArtStart.
In the afternoon, the students went to Pioneer Park, where they visited the logging museum and participated in a GPS activity.
In order to be eligible to participate in the day's activities, May said students needed to have good attendance, grades and behavior throughout the school year. May said the vast majority of the class was able to participate.
The Hodag Quest was a great way to end the school year, May said.
"We're having a ball," she said. "It's a great time."
