Following a flurry of hires over the past month, including a new activities director, a new Crescent Elementary School principal, and a new community education coordinator, the Board of Education is set to consider a new administrator for the district's charter schools.
A special meeting is set for Wednesday in which the board will consider charter school mainstay Wil Losch for the position.
The Northwoods Community Secondary School (NCSS) and the Northwoods Community Elementary School (NCES) have been without an administrator since Jay Joppa resigned in June.
Losch was recommended for the position after a series of interviews were conducted, Superintendent Kelli Jacobi said Tuesday.
"I will be recommending him to the board once I can pull together a special meeting, which we're in the process of trying to do right this minute," she said.
"We did interviews ... and we were looking for either administrative experience or charter experience. I worked with teachers from both of the charter schools and the Governing Council (on the interviews). Wil easily stood out as our top candidate."
The district sent out an email Wednesday announcing that the special meeting will be held on Monday.
Losch had been with the charter schools since their inception before moving on to teach seventh grade during the 2012-'13 school year.
His many years of experience was "key" in convincing Jacobi he is the right person for the job, especially since the schools will have to update their charters during the upcoming school year.
"He has that background. He knows the people that work with charter schools at DPI (Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction) that will be helping with the process of rewriting the charters which is going to have to happen during this upcoming school year. That was key in our selection - somebody that had been through that process and would be able to help the current staff work through that process again," Jacobi said.
The position is a .5 position, with half of that time spent at NCSS and the other half at NCES. To fill the other .5 needed to make it a full-time position, Losch will also work as an advisor at NCSS.
In addition to board approval, Losch must also get an emergency administrative license from the state. Jacobi said she doesn't foresee that being a problem.
"He's trying to get an emergency license. He is in the middle of his administrative program and he's completed half of it. We believe that he's going to be given an emergency license, which is not uncommon especially for part-time jobs," Jacobi said.
"There are a lot of pieces we're working to fit together to make it work to be a .5 advisor at NCSS and then a .5 administrator for both of the charters."
