On the job for just seven days, new Crescent Elementary School Principal Kelly Huseby is already hard at work preparing for the start of a new school year.

The School District of Rhinelander Board of Education confirmed Huseby as Crescent principal July 15. She takes over for former principal Teri Maney who was hired as the district's new director of curriculum.

Huseby has experience with the Tomahawk School District as the Director of Instruction since 2006, Associate Middle School Principal since 2007, and Title I/Reading Coordinator since 2004.

She was employed with the Rhinelander district between 1995 and 2000 as the Lead Title I Teacher/Coordinator and has now fulfilled a lifetime goal of becoming an elementary school principal.

"I was absolutely thrilled when I found out that I was the successful candidate. Becoming an elementary principal has been something that I've always wanted to do and has been a professional goal of mine since I got into adminstration," she said. "I was thrilled."

Huseby started her new job Monday by reacclimating herself with the district.

"There's a lot to do. (Monday was) actually my first day in the district. (I've been) in my office trying to orient myself to some of the materials that are in here and getting settled in a bit. I've been emailing key district staff about various items that I need to learn about and figuring out how things are done in Rhinelander," she said.

One of her top priorities is getting to know the people she will be working with - including staff, students, and parents - and opening the lines of communication.

"I've been communicating with teachers that are coming in. I've met with a few parents that have come into the building," she said. "I'll be getting to know my staff and sending out a communication to students and families and working on what my role will be in new teacher orientation. I'll be attending a conference in the middle to end of August with some teachers from the building. I want everyone - staff and parents and students - to get to know who I am and I want to get to know them."

Once students return in September, Huseby said she intends to be a very visible part of Crescent Elementary.

"(Once school begins) getting to know the kids definitely is going to be a priority. I'll be visiting classrooms, seeing my teachers as they're working with students. I want to be visible in the building," she said.

Beyond the meet-and-greets with staff, students, and parents, Huseby said she will also be working on progressing various initiatives being implemented throughout the school.

"Advancing all of the initiatives that have already been established here in the district is key. I still have to meet with Mrs. Maney, the former principal, about all of those initiatives, but I'll be really diving into what has already been established and getting oriented to Crescent School," Huseby said.

Having Maney available for consultation will be a helpful tool, Huseby said, adding that the two women should be able to help each other through the transition.

"Absolutely (Maney still being in the district) is a huge benefit to me in my new role. It's interesting because one of my key roles in Tomahawk was director of instruction, the role that Mrs. Maney is now taking. I feel like we'll really be able to help each other as we both transition (to our new positions)," Huseby said.

"I was also the assistant middle school principal in Tomahawk for six years, so I have experience in the associate principal role, but this will be my first head principal position. But, yes, it will be great to work with (Maney)."

Huseby has a lot on her plate but she says she's ready for the challenge.

"I'm really looking forward to diving in. I'm really looking forward to meeting the students and families of Crescent school and the rest of the staff. It's been great seeing teachers in the building already and being able to say hello to them and getting to know them a little bit," Huseby said. "It's been good."
