It was arguably the biggest game of the season for the members of Rhinelander III, who won the league tournament last week. Rhinelander III won the Carlson Division (12-2). The Cardinals were the winners of the Pohnl Division (10-4), setting up Wednesday's battle for the regular season championship.
Both teams started cold, going three up and three down in the first inning, before things got interesting.
Ben Quade was patient and drew a walk, and one out later Cole Jensen came to the plate. He would drive a bomb to deep center field and, turning on the jets, capitalized on an error for a two-RBI inside-the-park home run.
Rhinelander tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning with a walk from Dylan Roeser and a single from Charlie Wabick. Ben Quade would draw another walk in the fifth inning, followed by an error at the shortstop position that allowed Tyler Blomdahl to find first base.
Punctuating the inning was Jensen's unheard of second inside-the-park homer of the day. Two more runs in the seventh inning courtesy of Kurt Zuiker and Ben Quade would bring the game to its final tally.
While the Hodag offense held their own at the plate, Zuiker was absolutely dominant on the mound, walking only four while fanning eight. His only surrendered hit would come off a hanging curveball in the sixth inning.
Rhinelander III finished its Northwoods Babe Ruth Season 15-2 overall.
