TOMAHAWK - Rhinelander I never had a big inning at the plate Wednesday, but five solid innings did the trick.

The Hodags scored in each of the first five innings and withstood a comeback bid in the sixth to defeat the Tomahawk Rangers 8-5 in the Northwoods Babe Ruth Prep League tournament championship at Kahle Field.

Rhinelander I scored one run in the first and second innings, and two runs apiece in the third, fourth and fifth to keep the Cardinals playing from behind.

The Hodags used a combination of timely hitting and patience at the plate to generate its offense. The team only had six hits, but drew six walks.

Jon Huempfner broke a 2-2 tie in the third inning with a two-out, two-run double to left, scoring Alec Modrow and Trent Wild. Cody Sedlacek and Modrow delivered back-to-back RBI singles with two outs in the fourth. Brad Quade scored on an Ian O'Brien single in the fifth. O'Brien later scored on a fielders' choice by Zach Hargraves to give the Hodags an 8-3 lead.

Tomahawk strung together four consecutive two-out hits to plate two runs in the sixth, but never seriously threatened in the seventh.

Sedlacek got the win for the Hodags, allowing five runs on seven hits over six innings. Quade pitched the seventh with a strikeout and a walk to earn the save.

Sedlacek put the Hodags on the board in the first inning. He drew a lead-off walk, stole second and third and scored on a Logan Wild groundout. Huempfner was hit by a pitch to lead off the second. He moved to second on an error, to third on a sacrifice bunt by O'Brien and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hargraves.

Huempfner and Hargraves each drove in two runs Wednesday. The team's six hits were spread among six different players - Sedlacek, Modrow, Wild, Huempfner, O'Brien and Tim Remitz.

The victory completed the Prep League sweep for Rhinelander I, which also won the regular season title with an 8-3 record.
