Two hot-hitting innings were enough to send Rhinelander I past Eagle River Red 12-6 Tuesday in a Northwoods Babe Ruth Prep League semifinal at Stafford Field.

The Hodags strung together nine runs on eight hits between the third and fourth innings to build a lead they would never relinquish. Rhinelander I, the No. 1 seed in the Prep League tournament, played Tomahawk, the No. 2, seed for the championship Wednesday at Kahle Field in Tomahawk in a game that concluded after deadline. Tomahawk reached the finals of the 13-year-old division with a 13-10 victory over Nokomis Tuesday in Rhinelander.

Rhinelander I trailed 4-3 heading to the third inning as two pitchers held the Hodags hitless through two innings. But Cody Sedlacek's leadoff single in the third sparked an offensive onslaught. Logan Wild reached on a single and Brad Quade smacked a two-run single to right. Jon Huempfner singled in Quade and scored from third later in the inning when Ian O'Brien was caught in a rundown between first and second.

Zach Hargraves and Jeremy Moore hit back-to-back singles to lead off the fourth, an error loaded the bases and Alec Modrow plated a run, grounding into a fielder's choice. Wild followed with a two-run single and would eventually steal home. Quade singled and scored on a wild pitch.

Quade pitched four innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory, without allowing a hit. He struck out seven and walked four. Wild started and allowed two runs in each of the first three innings. He finished with four earned runs on five hits with a strike out and three walks.

Rhinelander I took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first without the aid of a hit thanks to three walks, three stolen bases and a pair of Eagle River errors. Sedlacek, Modrow and Huempfner all reached base and scored that inning.

Wild finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. Quade was 2-for-4 with two driven in. Sedlacek, Huempfner, Hargraves and Moore each collected a hit as Rhinelander cashed in on virtually all of its scoring opportunities. The Hodags only stranded one runner on base. Wild hit a two-out single in the sixth and was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice by Quade. Wild's sixth-inning single was the only hit by either team after the fourth inning.
