The Board of Education voted unanimously Monday to hire current Marion School District Athletic Director Brian Paulson.
Paulson was recommended after a series of interviews were held over the last few weeks.
"I'm pretty excited. I feel honored. I think that Rhinelander athletics has a great tradition and I'm excited to be a part of that," Paulson told the River News Tuesday morning.
Besides his work as athletic director in Marion, Paulson also has experience as a physical education teacher and assistant volleyball and basketball coach. He also served as head girls' basketball coach in Antigo and assistant basketball coach at Appleton East High School.
Paulson will receive a first-year salary of $60,000, according to district superintendent Kelli Jacobi who recommended him to the board.
The district had been searching for a new activities director since the board voted in May to part ways with former activities director Charlie LaHam.
Interviews began two weeks ago after the district received more than 40 applications for the position.
After two rounds of interviews, Jacobi recommended the board hire Paulson. She said experience is what set him apart from the other candidates.
"He has a couple years of experience and he knows the scheduling software, which is critical. We had two separate groups (that conducted interviews) and of all of the candidates interviewed with both groups he came out as number one for both groups," Jacobi said. "He came in as clearly the top candidate. He has experience. Although it's with a smaller school district, he has the kind of experience with the scheduling software that we need in our district. He has the kind of background we knew we needed."
Board President Ron Counter also pointed to experience when explaining why he voted in favor of the hire.
"We went with him because of his past experience. He seems to have a dynamic personality. I think he'll be able to move us along in both our athletics and activities programs," he said.
As Jacobi noted when the search began, the activities director position is no longer an administrative position. As a result, the district offered Paulson a one-year contract instead of the two-year contracts used previously.
"It's a one-year, non-administrative contract. There will be supervisory responsibilities but it's not an administrative contract," Jacobi said.
Paulson is expected to start as soon as he can be released from his current contract.
"He has to be released from his contract in Marion. His superintendent there knows that he was offered the job and is willing to work with him on that release," Jacobi said. "I'm hopeful that he will be able to start on Monday."
