Northwoods Babe Ruth Roundup
Three Rhinelander teams through to Senior League semis
It did not take long for the Northwoods Babe Ruth Senior League tournament to have its first upset.
Brevin Persike struck out nine batters in a complete-game effort as seventh-seeded Rhinelander II survived a late rally to knock off the second-seeded Tomahawk Cardinals 5-3 Saturday in the first quarterfinal at Stafford Field.
Rhinelander II jumped out to a 5-0 lead through 4 1/2 innings. Rhinelander scored three in the second thanks to a Travis Young RBI single and a two-run single by Alex Woynich. Brendon Mitchell walked, stole a base and scored in the fourth inning and Persike scored in the fifth off an RBI single by Cole Oettinger.
The Cardinals made things interesting with two runs in a two-out rally in the fifth and another run in the sixth, but Persike got a strikeout to end the sixth with the tying run at second and struck out the side in order in the seventh to secure the victory.
Persike gave up one earned run in a six-hit effort and was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Oettinger, Young, Seth Hargraves, Alex McKnight and Woynich also had hits for Rhinelander II, which faced the Tomahawk Hatchets in a semifinal Monday night in Tomahawk.
Senior: Tomahawk Hatchets 14, Laser Pros 10
The Hatchets reached the semifinals with a 14-10 victory over Rhinelander-Laser Pros in the second quarterfinal Saturday at Stafford Field. Laser Pros led 10-9 in the sixth, but the Hatchets plated five runs that inning to rally for the win.
Brandon Reinthaler was hot at the plate, but labored through 5 1/3 innings on the mound, walking nine batters in the loss. He gave up the go-ahead double with one out in the fifth and was replaced on the mound by Bradley Comer, who surrendered a two-run homer and an RBI single to account for the final score.
Reinthaler had a five-RBI day at the plate. He hit a bases-clearing triple in the third inning and scored on the play thanks to an errant throw to third. He then added an RBI single in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth, going 3-for-4 at the plate.
Laser Pros led 9-4 after the offensive outburst in the top of the fourth, but the Hatchets rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning and tied the game with a single run in the fifth.
Laser Pros pounded out 11 hits in defeat. Matt Rudolph went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs. Nick Spencer had a double, Tate Spencer collected three hits and scored three runs. Comer was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Brock Brewer was 1-for-2 with a pair of runs.
Reinthaler struck out seven and allowed nine hits in the loss.
Senior: Rhinelander I 20, Nokomis 5
Rhinelander I easily defeated Nokomis in a quarterfinal held Saturday in Tomahawk. Details were not provided. Rhinelander I faced top-seeded Rhinelander III in the semifinals Monday night in Tomahawk.
Prep: Rhinelander I 6, Tomahawk 2
Rhinelander I and Tomahawk came out of the starting gate early, but Rhinelander had the staying power in a 6-2 victory Friday in a Prep League game at Stafford Field.
Both teams scoring a pair of runs in the opening inning. But the Rangers dropped off, while Rhinelander I's offense kept rolling, rattling off one and two runs respectively over the next two innings.
Rhinelander tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Logan Wild had an impressive day on the mound holding the Rangers scoreless after the first. An error gave the Rangers position to strike with a man on in the top of the seventh, but two quick outs ended the game.
Wild notched his second complete game of the season. Wild paired with Brad Quade at the plate to combine for four hits and one walk in the game from the Nos. 3 and 4 spots in the lineup.
Prep: Rhinelander II 7, Eagle River Red 2
The second game of the night started much differently and early on had all the makings of a pitcher's duel. The first four innings passed with both teams struggling to find any sort of consistency offensively. Then Rhinelander II exploded in the fifth inning of a 7-2 victory.
Rhinelander II scored five runs to gain control of the game. They would score two more in the sixth inning to expand their lead to seven, and Easton Senoraske continued his dominance on the mound by heading into the seventh inning with a shutout.
Senoraske could not complete the shutout. A pair of early inning walks came back to haunt him courtesy of a couple errors. The Reds would manage to earn back two runs, but ultimately fail in their comeback bid.
