Rhinelander had two teams of two students qualify for the tournament. The students are Connor Kuczmarski, Ben Eversman, Matt Bloch and Tamarah Kreuger.
"They did very well considering we have been only competing in local tournaments that haven't been all that competitive," said coach Catherine Triplett. "We went to one state qualifying meet and ended up qualifying to make it to state. I'm just very proud of them, they really did a great job. They went in against a bunch of bigger schools and really held their own and did a great job."
The team's high finish is a testament to how well the students prepared, Triplett said, especially given that most of the other teams in the tournament were from much larger schools.
"They went through six rounds to get to the opti-finals, so they should be very proud of themselves. We started with about 80 teams in round one and by the time we got to opti-finals, we were down to eight teams, so that shows you how well they did. That's really good for them," Triplett said.
No matter where the two teams finished, Triplett said it was the experience that counts.
"I just really am so very proud of them. They worked hard for this and they went and outlasted a bunch of good teams from big schools. I'm so happy they were able to experience this. They really deserved it," Triplett said.
