Friday evening, Nicolet Area Technical College officials held an open house at the school's recently renovated University Transfer Center. The $4.5 million project was completed over the summer and students and staff have been making use of the building since the fall.

The timing of Friday's open house event was a way to use the college's most recently upgraded facilities to bring awareness to the Nicolet College Foundation whose primary purpose is to raise funds for student scholarships. The foundation has been in existence since 1970, and since 2001 it has secured donations that have resulted in more than 1,400 scholarships for Nicolet students. Last year, the foundation awarded more than 250 scholarships ranging in value from $400 to $3,000.

The most successful scholarship fundraising campaign for the foundation is "A Day for Nicolet" held every fall. This spring, the foundation is launching a new annual scholarship fundraising event: Nicolet College Run and Fun for Student Success.

The event will be held Saturday, May 11 and will include a 5K run, a children's fun run, and other family fun activities, said Heather Schallock, executive director of the Nicolet College Foundation.

Scholarships coming from the money raised through the event will be awarded in memory of Kory Dahlvig, a Nicolet College graduate who died in a car accident in 2010 while on duty in his role as a Vilas County Sheriff's deputy.

"We hope to grow the event," Schallock said.

On Friday, the intent of the open house at the University Transfer Center was to bridge the gap between the public and the students who benefit from the public donations that come in through the foundation. Nicolet students were on hand to give people tours of the University Transfer Center, which houses administrative and faculty offices, classrooms, as well as the central point for information about the college - the welcome center. The 40-year-old building received significant upgrades over the summer. Improvements included infrastructure upgrades such as the HVAC system and building wiring, as well as measures to bring the building up to code for federal disabilities laws and an overhaul of the science labs.

"That's why the foundation exists, to help students obtain the goal of higher education," Schallock said. "That's why we have students here (giving tours) so people can meet them and learn what they're balancing to earn that degree. We're trying to get that one-on-one, face-to-face connection so the community and college can come together."

Outside of specific fundraising events, the foundation is always seeking donations for student scholarships, Schallock said. Currently, the foundation is accepting student applications until March 12 for scholarships that will be awarded for the 2013-'14 school year.
