The day was designed to be another career exploration activity that will help students make post-secondary program plans. The Career Day helped students understand the need to focus their studies in high school toward a career goal and gave them great information about occupational opportunities they may want to consider. On the day, 29 speakers shared their knowledge and personal stories to help the Three Lakes students learn about a variety of careers.
Students attended large, general sessions and spent the majority of their day in small group sessions they selected based on potential career areas of interest to them. Small group sessions had between 8-12 students creating a more relaxed atmosphere and allowing for quality question and answer time. Speakers shared information with students about the knowledge, skills, and training that are required to make a successful entry into career areas.
"This allows our students to continue working on their individual success plans and take meaningful classes throughout their high school career," according to Gene Welhoefer, Director of Guidance. The connection between taking rigorous courses, preparing for post-secondary training, and being successful in a career was a common theme for the day.
The students and speakers felt it was a very meaningful day. Students enjoyed having a number of opportunities to hear about the world of work they will soon enter, the daily tasks that are necessary to be successful, and great life lessons. One student noted that the event was time well spent and overall was "a fantastic day." Another student was impressed by how much "all the speakers really liked their jobs." Many speakers commented on the relaxed atmosphere of the small group sessions, genuine interest of the students, and how fun it was to share information about their career with the students.
There was a local theme to the event as it featured many graduates of Three Lakes High School and other people who have a connection to the communities of the district. "We felt this was an important day for the future of our students," said Welhoefer "and we're fortunate to be able to have so many adults who care about our students and were willing to give time out of their busy work schedules." The event was a success and is being planned again for next year. Contact Steve Schacht or Gene Welhoefer at the Three Lakes School if you would like to help shape a student's future by sharing your experiences with the Three Lakes students.
