RBA seventh graders win home tournament

The Rhinelander Basketball Association seventh grade boys' green basketball team took first place in their home tournament Jan. 26 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.

In game one, they defeated Phillips 46-32. Brad Quade scored 13 points, Markus Johnson had nine, and Logan Freund had eight.

The Hodags allowed only two first half field goals in a 61-18 victory over Antigo in game two. Quade once again led the way with 21 points and Freund dropped in 10 points.

In game three the Hodags matched up against the Lakeland Thunderbirds, who were also 2-0 entering the game. The Hodags met the challenge, downing Lakeland 62-30. Owen White scored 16 points, Quade had 12 points, and Johnson added eight.

The Hodags finished the day in style by downing Tomahawk 57-24. Rhinelander's balanced scoring attack included Quade with 12 points, Freund with 11, and Brad Comer and Johnson with 10 apiece.

The seventh grade green team is currently 14-2 on the season.

The RBA's eighth grade and seventh grade black teams also took part in the Jan. 26 tournament. The eighth grade team went 3-1 on the day and took third place in the tournament. The team downed Prentice (50-42), Ashland (42-33) and Tomahawk (45-43). The Hodags lost to Antigo 45-38. The seventh grade black team went 0-4 on the day, finishing in sixth place in its division. The team lost to Antigo (31-27), Lakeland (45-18), Tomahawk (43-31) and Phillips (42-12).

Rhinelander Swim Club competes at divisional meet

The Rhinelander Swim Club traveled to Merrill on Jan. 26-27 to compete in the Central Wisconsin Swim Conference divisional qualifying meet. Seventy-two swimmers took part in the two-day meet, with the 10-and-under group swimming Saturday and the 11-and older-group swimming Sunday.

In order to swim in the divisional meet, swimmers needed to compete in two of the regular season meets. To advance to the championship meet, swimmers needed to finish in the top nine in individual events and the top six for relays.

Even though the swimmers were saying the pool was very warm, the team still managed to achieve some personal best times. Annika Benoy, 14, took 5.59 seconds off her 200-yard backstroke for a new time of 2 minutes 53.46 seconds. Russell Benoy, 11, dropped 8.31 seconds from his 100 backstroke (1:15.45), Kaitlynn Evenson, 11, took 5.77 seconds from her 100 backstroke (1:35.87). Aaron Fernandes, 12, took 5.40 seconds from his 100 freestyle (1:30.90).

Kylie Gechas, 7, dropped 7.94 seconds in the 50 freestyle (1:06.95). Charlie Heck, 7, dropped 7.72 seconds in the 100 individual medley (2:10.73). Maria Heck, 8, dropped 10.91 seconds from her 100 IM (1:59.10).

Martin Hoger, 11, shaved 10.27 seconds in the 100 backstroke (1:32.80). Taylor Hollands,11, took 5.91 off her 100 IM (1:34.52). Conor Natrop, 13, dropped 8.37 seconds in the 100 breaststroke (2:01.55). Grace Ribbe, 10, dropped 5.63 seconds in the 50 breaststroke (1:02.20). Olivia Roberts, 12, took 6.75 seconds from her 100 freestyle (1:15.44) and Jacques Tulowitzky, 9, dropped an amazing 19.38 seconds in the 100 freestyle (1:53.87).

The Rhinelander Swim Club will host the two-day CWSC championship meet this weekend at the Heck Family Community Pool. Today's competition will feature swimmers ages 10 and under and will begin at 12:30 p.m. Swimmers 11 and older will compete Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. The Rhinelander Swim Club wishes all the Hodag swimmers good luck.

JWMS wrestlers take third at conference

The James Williams Middle School wrestling team took third out of 15 teams Jan. 26 at the Central Wisconsin Wrestling Conference meet in Merrill.

The Hodags scored 171 points, and were 41 points behind conference champion Athens.

JWMS had two conference champions. Dante Steinmetz won the title at 71 pounds with a pair of decisions. Jacob DeMeyer took first in the 98-pound weight class with a pin an two major decisions.

Tyler Olson (84), Alec Bess (128), Alex Kurtz (144) and Colton Krueger (160) finished second in their brackets. Other placewinners were Brock Brewer (third, 210), Dante Suhm (fourth, 265), Scott Fox (5th, 112), Austin Arndorfer (5th, 175) and Alec Modrow (6th, 91).

Obadiah Kearney (105), Payton Hartman (120), Jeremiah Snyder (136) and Jerry Dubois (152) also competed.

Looking ahead to the future, the Hodags fared better than any other Great Northern Conference team in the field. Medford was ninth with 63.5 points, Antigo was 10th with 61 points and Tomahawk was 11th with 49.5 points.

RHS JV boys' skiers win NSL meets

The Rhinelander High School JV boys' downhill ski team cleaned up during the first two Northern Ski League meets of the season. The Hodags swept the top six places in the NSL meet Jan. 25 at Indianhead Mountain in Wakefield, Mich. T.J. Fritz, Alec Effinger, Zach Harder, Justin White, Spencer Seamans and Kyle Mork was the finishing order for the Hodags. Rhinelander took spots two through seven Monday during the NSL race at Christie Mountain. Effinger was the runner-up for the second race in a row. Fritz and White tied for third. Harder, Seamans and Mork rounded out the running order.

JWMS eighth graders pound Horace Mann

The James Williams Middle School eighth grade girls' basketball team cruised past Horace Mann middle school 55-27 Thursday at the JWMS gymnasiums. Ali Schickert paced the Hodags with 23 points. Kaly Kostrova added 13 in the victory.
