However, we don't hear much about it in the Northwoods.
But this year, Johnny Nick's Bar and Pizza and Kathan Inn Bar and Grill teamed up to offer the sport. While most curling clubs offer the sport in an indoor arena, this year's Northwoods Pond Ice Curling League is held in a natural, outdoor environment. Four teams are playing in the league's inaugural year. Games are played outdoors, on the lake, at both Kathan Inn and Johnny Nick's.
The idea began with a one-day tournament, held last winter at Johnny Nick's. Mike Warwick, bar manager at Kathan Inn, then took it a step further, and helped establish a league this winter. This year's Northwoods Ice Curling Pond League began on Jan. 6 and runs Sundays through Feb. 24, with a noon start time at both Kathan Inn and Johnny Nick's. Spectators are encouraged to come out and watch, support the sport, and the teams.
Anyone interested in having a team in the league next year, or being a team member, can contact Kathan Inn at (715) 479-4260, or Johnny Nick's at (715) 479-9743. Additional establishments are encouraged to create their own curling rink to encourage more teams to join the league.
Kathan Inn is located at 8570 County H in Eagle River. Johnny Nick's is located at 8647 Evergreen Drive in Eagle River.
