Larsen was tasked with contacting Santa to see what might be on the list for those families and purchasing items. Members of the department came together to wrap presents and Santa carved out some time in his busy schedule to help deliver them.
Assistant Fire Chief Ryan Larsen, Captain A.J. Wege, Larsen, Santa, and myself loaded up Engine One, followed by Firefighter Gina Conkey, Lt. Mark Conkey, and a good crew of Santa's helpers in Rescue One, and we were off to a residence on Skunk Creek road where a grateful family was surprised with lights, sirens, and most importantly, Santa. Presents were handed out, firefighting equipment was looked over and pictures of awestruck children were taken. Santa was even presented with a plate of cookies. We loaded up again to surprise another family on County Road C.
Once again Santa arrived with much fanfare and the second family was equally surprised. After all Santa has made a career of getting in and out of houses without much notice. We couldn't depart until a few future firefighters were sized for helmets and had a chance to take in the view from the front seat of Engine One. On our ride back to the fire barn Larsen pronounced the excursion a success.
"Our community is very giving to the fire department and it is awesome to give back to the community," she said.
