Central families enjoy special night of holiday fun
By By Tim Howell-
On Dec. 10, Central Intermediate School held its first Family Night of the year. The theme of this year's gathering was "A Family Night with a Holiday Twist." Students and their families were invited to create a holiday scrapbook page, read and enjoy holiday stories, and, of course, enjoy a delicious treat of hot apple cider, hot cocoa and cookies.
The Family Night was part of the district's and Central's PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention System) goals, and also tied in with topics fourth and fifth grade students were working on. Topics of study included: personal narrative writing, conventions of print, author's purpose and reading across a variety of genres. Staff members thought the night's activities would be a fun and engaging way to combine a variety of topics and interests in a relaxing holiday atmosphere. Their efforts proved successful, with over 50 families participating in this year's event.
"It was a wonderful gathering of students, parents, siblings and grandparents," said teacher Theresa Werner. "Each and every person who attended seemed to enjoy themselves, and furthermore, were excited to share holiday traditions through discussions, writing and art."
"There were definitely a lot of traditions being shared," stated another staff member. "It was very interesting and engaging to sit with students and families and hear what puts a gleam in their eye during the holiday season."
As part of the evening, families were also able to have a family photo taken by fourth grade teacher Mr. Andy Marko. Some families opted to use the photo for their scrapbook page, while other families were thrilled with how professional the photo turned out and said that it would definitely be used in this year's holiday card.
"We couldn't have taken a better photo if we had planned," said one proud parent. "It's honestly the best photo we've ever taken as a family."
With the first Family Night of the 2013-14 school year successfully in the record books, the students, families and staff are looking forward to participating in the next school gathering.
"Plans are already being discussed," said Werner. "With one Family Night under our belt, we are looking forward to celebrating again what makes Central Intermediate a fun and successful place to learn. Only this time we hope to do it in above-zero temperatures!"
