The gingerbread house is an age-old holiday tradition beloved by many around the world.

Each holiday season families from all over the world construct the tiny structures with frosting, gumdrops and any other edible accessories they can imagine.

This year, Sue Wege of Sportsman's Cafe is putting her own spin on the holiday tradition, and she's doing it all for a good cause.

"Everyone builds a gingerbread house, so we thought it would be cool to do something a little different and make one out of Rice Krispies," she said.

The construction began late last week and was scheduled to finish Tuesday afternoon. By Monday, the house and surrounding features were already taking shape.

"We made some hard candy for our river and used waffle cones for our trees," Wege said. "There's peanut brittle for the sidewalk, and we used more of the Rice Krispies to create some little snowmen. We have some cakes that we're going to put on there to make a mountain that little people can slide on. It's all edible too."

When the Rice Krispie house is finished, Wege is planning on using it to raise some money for a cause she believes in.

"We're going to sell raffle tickets all the way up until Dec. 20, then we're going to draw the winning ticket and all the proceeds will go to the NATH house (the Frederick Place homeless shelter)," she said. "We've done things for them in the past with an Easter egg activity. It's a good cause and they can always use the help."

Wege said she's excited for someone to win her edible creation. It was easy coming up with creative inspiration while working for such an important cause, she said.

"We thought it would be a good idea to do something and had an urge to raise some money for charity," she said. "When we decided to make the Rice Krispie house, we started throwing some ideas around as to what we wanted to put on it. When we started building it, we came up with more and more ideas and started adding to the plan. It's been a lot of fun."
