The selected entries are "Christmas Above" by Ashley Adams, "The Empty Chair" by Aaron Fernandes and "The True Meaning of Christmas" by Ellen Padgett.
All three poets are students at Nativity of our Lord Catholic School. The young authors will read their selections during the service.
Students were asked to submit poems addressing the themes of memories and the holidays.
The Christmas Memories Memorial is a gathering open to all members of the community to offer support, sharing, and inspiration as people encounter their first holiday season following the death of a friend or family member. As part of this program, students from area schools were invited to create an original poem dealing with the subjects of memories, loss of a loved one, or the holidays in general. Originality and creativity were the key criteria for the winning submissions.
The staff at Carlson Funeral Home would like to thank all participating students for their efforts. A special thank you to the staff at Nativity of our Lord Catholic School for their support and assistance with this program.

Here are the winning selections:
Christmas Above
by Ashley Adams
Christmas Day means more to me,
Than food and presents under the tree.
It's a time to love and a time to share,
Showing others that you really care.
It's a time to spend with family and friends,
And even when they're gone, it's not quite the end.
They may not be here with you this day,
But you can be with them, all you must do is pray.
Though their lives may have long since passed,
The memories will always last.
So if those you love aren't with you, don't shed a tear,
Because they will have Christmas in heaven this year.
The Empty Chair
By Aaron Fernandes
You sit and stare
At an empty chair
You sit on that empty chair
You play with your hair
In that empty chair
You see the Christmas tree
You remember the gifts
Your loved one gave you
Then you remember Jesus' gift
Though you may weep and cry
Know that on high
Is not an empty chair
Know that soon you will be reunited
God will be there
Love will be everywhere!
So wipe away the tears
And celebrate with cheers!
Look under the tree
One gift you cannot see
The reason we celebrate
This Christmas Day,
Jesus' birth
Look at that empty chair
It is not a sign of death
But of new life
The True Meaning of Christmas
By Ellen Padgett
Snow is falling and time draws near
For Christmas morn is almost here
But sometimes its true meaning seems to disappear
So this year, when the time is here
In the midst of Christmas cheer
Remember our savior who came to earth
So we may have our second birth
Recall a babe lying in the hay
Just stop and take a moment to pray
Think of those looking down on us
And of God who loves us so very much
So this Christmas don't forget!
Those before us who have gone to rest
