A group of Rhinelander High School students have just returned from a tour of Italy. Upon arriving in Venice, sophomores Morgan Blaser and Tessa Block share the excitement of taking a launch from the airport directly to the island of Lido with senior Lindsey Lieck. As a city of islands technically on a swamp, Venice was a cultural eye-opener for many in the group. Traveling to Venice required a 15 minute trip on the vaporetto, a public waterbus system. Once in venice, automobile traffic was non-existent. The sea made its presence known daily during high tide as a few members of the trip learned first-hand. A trip to St. Mark's Basilica for an Easter Vigil meant walking in 12-inch water from the vaporetto stop to Piazza San Marco and crossing a moat inside the church to take a seat.
