After taking second place at the Finance and Investment Bowl Tuesday, the team of Matt Anderson, Mike Anderson, Blake Enerson, and Hunter Piasecki will now be traveling to Madison to compete in the state championship.
That's exciting news for Piasecki, who said he really enjoyed competing in the bowl but is especially anxious to visit Madison.
"I think it was great. We had a lot of fun, got to meet some kids from other schools - it was just cool to compete in this kind of stuff. It's different than most other competitions which is cool," Piasecki said. "State's going to be awesome. It's in Madison which is a cool city. It's going to be fun to go there and to get to compete."
The Rhinelander team advanced by showcasing its knowledge of finance and economics. The teams were asked a serious of questions about investment and money management with the winning team being determined by the number of correct answers.
Coach Patrick Kubeny said he is very proud of his students. He noted they are going to go into state hungry and ready to bring home the gold.
"We're excited. It's kind of bittersweet. It would have been nice to bring home the trophy but at the same time, I know that these guys know that they can face (Merrill, the team that won the bowl) at state so I think they'll actually study a little bit more and prepare a little bit more because they'll be even hungrier. They want to win. It's competitive. I think I'll get more out of them at state because we got second here than if we would have won it today. I think they might have gotten a little cocky and figured they didn't have to prep so much for state," Kubeny said. "In the end, though, I'm proud of them. They did a great job today. Now, it's on to state."
