The Rhinelander High School band and choir returned from the Alamo Showcase of Music in San Antonio, Texas Monday evening with a few extra pieces of luggage - four large, glittering, golden trophies.

Both groups of musicians swept their respective divisions, with each taking home a "Superior" rating award and the "Outstanding in Class" award.

"Both the choir and band got 'Superior' ratings, which is the highest rating we could get and we both got 'Outstanding in Class' for our divisions. We did really well. We took everything we could. We're both so proud of our kids, just really incredibly proud of these kids," choir director Desiree Wattelet said.

"It was a great trip and coming home like this just makes it that much better. I can't say enough about how proud we are of these kids."

Like her choir counterpart, band director Connie Piasecki gushed about the incredible poise and ability displayed by her students.

"The kids have been rehearsing the music for the last several months - both ensembles, chorus and band - and they worked really hard. To go in front of judges and perform is very difficult, especially after traveling all the way down there, so we are extremely proud of them," Piasecki said.

"It was an intense and nerve-wracking situation and they performed so well, it was just fantastic. We are very proud of them."

Coming home with one award would have been remarkable, completing a clean sweep and bringing home every award possible was a dream come true, Piasecki said.

"It was awesome. We were very thrilled to be able to bring home all the gold we could. It was a great festival and we felt we had done really well and were hoping it would show through in the results and it did. It was excellent," she said. "It's all about the kids, though. We're up there directing them and we work with them, but they are the ones who put in all the time practicing. They are the ones who take their instruments home to work on the music. They are the ones up there performing. They did such a great job. They really deserved this and we're just so happy they were rewarded for their efforts. It's awesome."
