JWMS football at MHLT

The James Williams Middle School seventh and eighth grade football teams took on seventh and eighth grade counterparts from Minocqua-Hazelhurst-Lake Tomahawk Elementary School Tuesday in Minocqua. The MHLT seventh graders defeated Rhinelander, while the eighth grade teams played to a scoreless tie.

RHS JV girls' tennis vs. Lakeland

The RHS JV girls' tennis team battled Lakeland Tuesday at the RHS tennis courts. The Hodags defeated Lakeland 10-1 in JV matches Tuesday and Medford 12-1 Thursday.

Hodag BMX Club heads to state

Several members of the Hodag BMX Club show off the awards they won at the Central Wisconsin State Championships Sept. 1 and 2 in Wisconsin Rapids. Local soccer team wins Illinois tournament

The newly formed United Northwoods Select U18 girls' team started its fall tournament season with a bang by taking first place at the 2012 Puma Labor Day Invitational hosted by the Rockford Raptors in Rockford, Ill.

Saturday's games included a 4-0 win against Racine United and later that evening a 3-1 win against Rush Wisconsin. Sunday's noon game against the Stars SC ended with a 1-1 draw placing UNS at the top of the leaderboard with 24 points. The championship game as UNS defeated the Rush, 3-1.

The UNS girls' U18 team includes players from Rhinelander, Three Lakes, Ashland, Antigo and Oregon.

Middle school cross country at Wittenberg

The James Williams Middle School cross country team took part in the Charger Invite in Wittenberg Tuesday. The JWMS boys placed fifth out of eight teams and the JWMS girls finished sixth out of 10 teams.

Tyler Kolosa paced the Hodags in the boys' race, finishing 14th in a time of 14:51.91. Teammate Robert Ritchie took 15th (14:55.37). Markus Johnson (25th, 16:11.13), Kade Kennedy (30th, 16:31.72), Andy Padgett (32nd, 16:42.16), Max Holperin (38th, 17:19.17) and Reeve Craig (43rd, 17:27.39) rounded out the team's scoring. Eric Grulke, Kyle Kuester, Elliot Fehlen, Alex Schaub, Russell Benoy, Ian O'Brien and Peyton Pitterle also participated.

The Hodag girls were led by Alayna Franson, who placed 10th overall (15:00.59). Payton Hartman finished 11th (15:01.89). Sydney Scarcelli (40th, 17:53.94), Maddie Meyer (51st, 18:56.54), Madison Schindler (53rd, 18:57.70), Ellen Padgett (55th, 19:17.12) and Claire Bowman (63rd, 20:27.22) rounded out the scoring. Ashley Croner, Shelby Kuehn, Megan Jones and Carmen Incha also ran for the JWMS girls.
