This year's theme for the poster contest was "Soil to Spoon." Area students submitted their artwork to Oneida County and were judged on Oct. 16. Comments from the judges included: "Judging these posters is a tough but rewarding job;" "It's wonderful to see so many ideas from the imaginations of our youth;" and "They do so well and put so much time and effort into their designs."
The winners of the poster contest are as follows - Elementary Division: First: Amber Bramm; Second: Maddi Roesner; Third: Louis Malais. Middle Division: First: Hannah Mahner; Second: Hope Novak; Third: Bridget Rich. Junior Division: First: Ryan Roberts; Second: Kaylee Williams; Third: Angela Timm. In the Junior Division Special, the first-place winner was Edith Parker. Congratulations to all the artists. Copies of these winning posters can be seen just outside the County Board Room on the south wall, second floor of the Oneida County Courthouse. They will be displayed there for a while, then moved to the first floor display case for an extended period of time.
The speaking contest was held on Oct. 18 at the Oneida County Courthouse. A large crowd gathered to watch students in the elementary and senior divisions give their speeches on conservation or environmental awareness issues. The winners and their speech titles in all divisions follow: Elementary Division: First: Grace Ribbe, "Problematic Fleas"; Second: Zoe Bonack,"Eliminating the Invasive Mussel"; Third: Martin Hoger,"The Right Duff." In the Senior Division, Cassandra Hoger placed first with her speech called, "Hot Summer, Hotter Topic" and Benjamin Metzger was awarded second place for his speech titled, "E-cycling." Congratulations to all the speakers.
The Land & Water Conservation Department wishes to thank area youth, teachers and parents/guardians for all their hard work and support, and judges, score and time keepers and other staff, without whom, this contest could not be held. The department hopes that future contests will continue to be as successful.
