The WASB (Wisconsin Association of School Boards) held their Region 2 Fall Meeting at the Eagle River Inn in Eagle River on Wednesday, Oct. 17. School boards and administrators from around the area gathered for education updates. The Mercer School was awarded a book for their library entitled, "Creating Innovators: The Making of Young People Who Will Change the World" by Tony Wagner because they were the only school board that had their full membership in attendance.

Wagner will be one of the speakers at the January School Board Convention in Milwaukee.

Attending the Eagle River meeting were Mercer School Board President Kelly Kohegyi, Vice President Steve Hoffmeister, Clerk Denise Thompson, Treasurer Deanna Pierpont and CESA representative Eddie Alvey, Jr.

The WASB holds 15 regional meetings around the state to discuss ideas and hold local training.

Regional Director Dave Schmidt, of Chequamegon, welcomed representatives from local school boards in the region. In addition to Mercer and Chequamegon, attendees came from Eagle River, Northland Pines, Prentice, Rhinelander, Three Lakes, Tomahawk and Phillips. Other school districts not in attendance were Crandon, Elcho, Florence, Hurley, Lac du Flambeau, Lakeland, Laona, Minocqua, North Lakeland, Phelps, Wabeno Area, White Lake and Woodruff.

During the conference, Staff Counsel Barry Forbes gave an Act 10 update and WASB 2012 President Patrick Sherman welcomed the group using a video presentation. Member recognition was held with Kohegyi receiving the Level 2 award and Thompson and Pierpont receiving Level 3. Each of them received a pin and certificate for their commitment to children.
