The Rhinelander Street Cats of the Midwest Junior Hockey League return to the ice this weekend, looking to break into the win column in front of the home fans as they face Tennyson Chevrolet for a two-game series tonight and Sunday at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.

The Cats (0-2-0-0) lost their opening two games of the season against Hartland Sept. 22 and 23, but were very competitive in a pair of two-goal losses against a team that has started the MWJHL season 7-0-0-0.

"I prefer to lose against (a) strong team than have an easy victory over (a) weak team," Rhinelander coach Igor Myaskovskiy said. "I (was) very happy to start (the) season with very strong team. It's a good lesson. My prediction, Hartland will be one of the best teams in the league, like we are."

Cats' goalie Spencer Brasswell received MWJHL goaltender of the week honors for his 39-save performance in a 5-3 loss to Hartland Sept. 22. Brasswell made several stellar saves in the contest, which Rhinelander led 3-1 after two periods.

The Street Cats showed they have a diverse scoring attack. Defenseman Devin Vander Wyk scored two goals in the series, but the team had five other players score and 12 players record at least one goal or one assist in the series.

Myaskovskiy said he likes the nucleus of his team.

"With our goalie - I'm not afraid to call him star goalie - Spencer Brasswell (and) players like Dylan Farmer, Taylor Cutting, Peter Carlin, Devin Vander Wyk, Nick Fleming, Eric Blankenship, and I can continue that list of names, we can be (a) very strong and powerful team," he said.

Tennyson (2-0-0-0) comes in off a 3-1 win over Soo Sept. 23 and a 4-1 win over Holland Sept. 28, but could be a little weary for tonight's 7:30 series opener. The Chevys played Northwest Ohio in Toledo last night, in a game that finished after deadline, before making the long trek to northern Wisconsin.

The two teams will square off again Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

Defender Thomas Emery racked up two goals and an assist for Tennyson in its first two games, but racked up 23 minutes of time in the penalty box, including 17 minutes against Holland.

Myaskovskiy said he was happy to see fans show up and support the new team during its debut two weekends ago and hopes to see more fans in the stands this weekend.

"We really appreciate our fans who come and support us," he said. "We play hard, we do our best and we (are) happy when our fans share with us moments of our emotions, effort and sadness. We promise to bring them very soon moments of joy, goals and victories."
