Five out of the seven members of the Rhinelander Wrestling Club who participated at the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation's Kids Folkstyle state tournament walked away as placewinners.
Alec Kurtz finished second in his bracket at the competition, held at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison March 23 and 24. Jacob DeMeyer took home third place. Dante Steinmetz and Kayia Shrader finished fourth and Payton Hartman finished fifth.
Kurtz pinned the first three opponents he faced in his 16-kid bracket in the 1999-2000, 125-pound weight class, but lost by a 6-0 decision in the finals.
"Alec Kurtz wanted to improve on his last year's finish," coach Mark Steinmetz said. "He came back from being down nine in the third period and pulled off a pin. He wrestled with confidence not seen early in the season."
DeMeyer had three decisions and a pin to his credit in the tournament. He lost in the semifinals in the 1999-2000, 85-pound class, but bounced back in the third place match with a 2-1 decision.
Dante Steinmetz (1999-2000, 67 pounds), went 3-2 on the weekend with two pins. Shrader (girls' 1997-99, 125 pounds) lost in the semifinals, but earned a pin in the consolation semifinal to get to the third place match. Hartman (girls' 1997-99, 95 pounds) went 2-2 with a pair of 7-0 decisions to her credit.
Also wrestling, but not placing for the Hodags were Tyler Olson (1999-2000, 70 pounds) who went 2-2 during the tournament, and Cole Price (2003-04, 45 pounds) who went 1-2 with a pin.
"Tyler was just one point away from placing and wrestled very well. Cole got over first match jitters and wrestled well in his next two," Steinmetz said. "Placing five of seven was great, every kid worked so hard to prepare. Best part is we will be back even better next year with all kids with the exception of Cole being on the (James Williams Middle School) team."
The JMWS team handed out its team awards Monday as part of a combined banquet for the Rhinelander Wrestling Club, the JWMS wrestling team and the RHS wrestling team.
Derrick Dumprope was named the middle school team's most valuable wrestler. Hartman and Zach Maas were given the best attitude award. Alec Modrow was named the hardest worker and Colton Krueger was named the most improved wrestler.
