Swimming
Feb. 24 and 25, Rhinelander Swim Club members Russell Benoy and Miranda Erdmann traveled to Waukesha to compete in the 12 and under state meet. Being their first state meet, both swimmers were a little nervous but handled the pressure very well.
Benoy, competing in the boys' age 10 and under division, finished 22nd in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:34.03), 24th in the 50 breaststroke (42.73), 36th in the 100 backstroke (1:23.58), 37th in the 100 freestyle (1:12.78) and 42nd in the 50 backstroke (38.89).
Erdmann, in the girls' 10 and under division, finished 45th in the 100 breaststroke (1:34.76), 49th in the 50 breaststroke (44.04) and tied for 68th in the 100 backstroke (1:25.75).
Even though they did not place high enough to receive medals or ribbons, they both agreed that it was a great experience.
"It was really loud, but still fun," Benoy said. "Competing at the state meet was really a big honor and it was cool to swim with the best swimmers in Wisconsin."
"My first event because I was really nervous," Erdmann said when asked about her most memorable moment from the meet. "The officials started each race really fast and it was hard to hear them and the buzzer."
Both these swimmers also qualified for and are competing in the Midwest Regionals taking place in Minnesota March 31 and April 1. They will be swimming with the Northern Lakes Aquatic Club, along with 53 other swimmers from communities in north central Wisconsin, under the direction of coach Rob Meyer.
