Wrestling

The Rhinelander Wrestling Club held its annual tournament Feb. 26 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium. The club had 55 members compete in the event. There were 327 wrestlers in all, up from 284 the year before.

Taking first place for the Hodags were Alec Kurtz, Alec Mudrow, Colton Krueger, Dante Steinmetz, Dante Suhm, Jacob DeMeyer, Kaiya Shrader, Michael Schramke and Owen Kurtz.

Second place finishes went to Aiden Ostermann, Alex Huff, Ashton Swaney, Brock Lieder, Gavin Ostermann, Jesse Mahner, Maxwell Ratty, Owen Dahl and Tyler Olson (kindergartner).

Finishing third in their brackets were Aidan Ward, Ashton Swaney, Alec Bess, Alex Monk, Bobby Towne, Cole Lehman, Cole Price, Connor Olson, Eric Grulke, Gus Phillipich, Jaden Schoeneck, Jerry DuBois, Joe Lieder, Josh Randolph, Logan Cook, Matthew Alsteens, Michael Wagner, Cael Steinmetz and Walker Hartman.

Kyleah Hartman, Aidin McGuane, Reagan Hartman, Austin Randolph, Isabel Hartman, Tye Ernst and Payton Hartman walked away with fourth place finishes.

Also wrestling for the club were Ashton Voermans, Colton Leman, Connor Lund, Derrick Dumprope, Draven Klaver, Dresden Klaver, Gaven Durkin, Hunter Hapka, Joey Durkin, Tucker Leman, Zachery Maas and Adam Maas.

Hockey

The Rhinelander Ice Association hosted a squirt level hockey tournament Feb. 24, 25 and 26 at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.

Rhinelander's Squirt A team went 1-1-1 in the event and took second place. The team tied Parkway Chevy 1-1 and trounced Altoona 10-0 in pool play to earn a spot in the championship game. There, the team lost to Monroe A 3-2, despite a 34-14 advantage in shots on goal.

Rhinelander's Squirt B team went 1-2-0 and finished in seventh place. The Hodags lost to Everest 3-2 in the quarterfinals and to Shawano 2-1 in the consolation semifinals. The team bounced back with a 5-4 overtime victory over Monroe B in the seventh place game.

Harrison Shinners and Payton Johnson each had two goals and an assist in the tournament. Jakob Losch, Nicolas Jones, Brett Benes and Teagean Guckenberg also scored. Joe Schneider made 24 saves in two games. Johnson made six saves in one game. The RIA Squirt Bs are in Minocqua this weekend for the Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association's Squirt 3B state tournament.

Girls' basketball

The RHS junior varsity and freshman teams finished their seasons this week.

The Hodag freshmen concluded their season with victories over Medford anā€ˆLakeland, while the Hodag JVs lost to both teams.

The Hodag freshmen recorded a big 48-18 win over the Raiders in Rhinelander March 1. Rhinelander outscored Medford in every quarter and held the Raiders scoreless in the third quarter.

Emily Kadlec led the way with 13 points. Riley Aschenbrenner and Brianna Gilbert each had nine, Brittany Haker had seven and Hannah Eggers had six. Sam Hoppe and Morgan Blaser had two points each.

The RHS freshmen blew their game with Lakeland wide open, outscoring the T-Birds 20-2 in the final quarter and 26-2 in the second half, en route to a 37-17 victory Feb. 24 in Minocqua. Gilbert led all scorers with 15 points. Aschenbrenner had 13. Hoppe and Kadlec each had four points. Eggers scored one.

The JVs fell to Medford 54-38 March 1 at the Jim Miazga Community Gym. A slow start cost the Hodags, who fell behind 21-11 after one quarter and 36-18 at halftime. Rhinelander outscored Medford 20-18 in the second half.

Ally Godin led a balanced Hodag attack with 12 points. Molly Willging and Mara Meyer each had eight points. Ali Knapp had six and Miranda Berndt and Julie Jeunen each finished with two points.

In a back and forth game Feb. 24 at Lakeland, the Hodags could not overcome a 3-point halftime deficit as they fell 43-38. The team finished the game with four players after a couple of players fouled out. Meyer led the Lady Hodags with 13 points. Berndt had nine. Godin had seven. Willging had six. Knapp and Jeunen chipped in two apiece.
