Plea agreement likely for doctor facing child porn charge
Dr. Bruce K. Jacobson made an appearance in Oneida County Circuit Court Tuesday afternoon. Jacobson's attorney, Jeffrey Jackomino, said after negotiations with Oneida County District Attorney Mike Bloom, he believes that an agreement has been reached but he hasn't had a chance to fully review it with his client. Reserve Judge Conrad Richards agreed to adjourn the case and set a plea hearing for July 17. A separate date for sentencing would follow.
Jacobson, 52, was arrested on Dec. 15, 2011, after a search warrant was executed at his residence.
According to the criminal complaint, the Oneida County Sheriff's Office began investigating Jacobson after a special agent with the Department of Justice discovered a certain IP (Internet Protocol) address "was offering to participate in the distribution" of child pornography.
The service and billing addresses for the account were later traced to Jacobson's residence and when the special agent used computer software to request child pornography from the IP address in question, he received three files depicting young males engaging in sexually explicit conduct, the complaint states.
Jacobson told officers he had been living alone at the residence for approximately three years, and explained he had two laptops and a wireless router that he used to access the Internet. He noted that it was secured to prevent any unauthorized use.
However, later in his interview with police, Jacobson admitted to struggling with the use of Internet pornography. He told Det. Sgt. Dave Kroll that he knew he was "doing something bad" and it bothered him.
Following his arrest, Jacobson resigned from his position as a surgeon with Ministry Medical Group in Rhinelander. In January, he was formally charged with one count of possession of child pornography, a class D felony that carries a maximum prison sentence of 25 years.
