Thursday marked the final day of classes in the School District of Rhinelander for all students except the graduating seniors. Each school finished out the year in its own way, but none celebrated quite like Central School where the elementary students participated in a series of Olympic-style challenges in anticipation of the upcoming London Summer Olympics.
One trio of students took a quick break to enjoy their lunches after the games were completed. Between wide smiles and consistent laughter, the group chatted about the day's challenges.
"The Olympics were a ton of fun," student Michael Fritz said. "I loved the basketball dribble. All of the lessons I've taken really helped me there."
"The obstacle course was my favorite," Montana Jarrett added. "It tested our abilities to see how fast we could go through all the stuff."
"I liked the 50 yard dash," Tyler Norton said. "I just think it's really fun to get out there and run."
It wasn't long though before the conversation turned to something much more serious. The group began to plan their summer breaks.
"I'm really looking forward to summer school and playing lots of basketball," Fritz said.
"I just can't wait to go to friends' houses and play outdoors all summer," Norton said.
After their lunch break concluded, the friends rejoined their classmates for an extended recess. The playground was alive with activity. The four square court, swing set and jungle gym were all popular as the kids enjoyed a warm, sunny day.
The students weren't the only ones enjoying the special day though. Fifth grade teacher Jesse Richter said the teachers were having just as much fun.
"The Olympics were great," Richter said. "The kids get to run around, and the whole school is out so they get to play with their friends from other classes.
With that said, Richter hastily returned to the basketball court where he and fellow teacher Derek Lemmens were teaching the finer points of the game.
Not far from Central School, the students at Rhinelander High School were preparing for their summer vacation as well. When the final bell sounded at last, they burst through the front doors with enthusiasm, more than ready to enjoy the summer weather. Freshman Dakota Snyder, who was quick to point out he was a sophomore now, summed up the special feeling surrounding the last day of school.
"All the kids have all this tension and energy built up from the school year," Snyder said. "What makes it so great is that you know you have all sumer to just let loose and go crazy."
He remembered having days like the Central School students enjoyed, but said the last day of classes gets better every year.
"Elementary School isn't as exciting because of the prospect of summer school and the break seems so much shorter," Snyder said. "The feeling on the last day of freshman year though, wow, nothing beats it."
Apart from the occasional brief pause to say goodbye to classmates, the students left school in a matter of moments and for the most part, the grounds emptied. The countdown and clock watching was finally over, and they were already out getting a head start on their well-deserved break. They know all too well that fall will come far too fast to waste a single second.
