On to the next adventure
New graduates reflect, look ahead during Sunday's commencement
High school can be the greatest and the worst time of one's life, often at the same time.
As a new group of graduates learns every year, high school is the perfect place to learn about the intricacies of the human condition - including the bittersweet feeling that often accompanies life's most important milestones.
So it was for the School District of Rhinelander's Class of 2012.
As speaker after speaker rose to address their classmates during Sunday's commencement ceremony, a theme of looking forward while remembering the past crept through to the surface.
A chapter is ending, while another is right on the other side of the page.
Memories last forever, if nothing else does.
Sadness and excitement often go hand-in-hand.
The students rose to thank their teachers for the support and instruction they had given them.
They rose to remember their friends and the wild times they had, even when they could only be discussed under the veil of an inside joke.
They rose to thank their parents - and sometimes to apologize.
In the end it was a day of sorrow and pure happiness, a day to look back on what each graduate has learned over the last four years and prepare for the challenges and accomplishments that lie ahead.
