- Three RHS wrestling team members took first place Jan. 21 at a junior varsity tournament at Wausau East. Dan Solberg won the title at 138 pounds. Moglee Finch defeated teammate Dominic Littleton for first at 152 pounds. Luke Linsmeyer took first at 170 pounds. In addition to Littleton, Jacob Froseth (126) and Nick Dumprope (132) earned second place finishes. Pete Furyk (126), Tyler Morris (138), Zach Rinehart (145), Marc Nyland (195) and Logan Enerson (220) each finished third.
"Every guy in the tournament won at least one match. We wrestled pretty well," noted RHS wrestling coach Paul Ellenbecker.
The team went 1-3 in JV matches Jan. 26 against Mosinee. Jordan Lundt won a 138-pound match for the Hodags. Dumprope lost at 126, Chris Connors was defeated at 132 and Morris lost at 138.
- The Rhinelander Wrestling Club tied for third with Merrill and D.C. Everest Jan. 22 at the Antigo youth wrestling tournament. Six Hodags earned first place in their weight classes. They were Walker Hartman, Dante Steinmetz, Jaden Schoeneck, Cole Price, Gavin Osterman and Max Ratty. Second place finishes were earned by Owen Kurtz, Cole Lehman and Ashton Voermans. Third place winners included Brock Lieder, Dante Suhm, Regan Hartman and Kyleah Hartman. Fourth place went to Tye Ernst, Kamerin Reash, Joe Lieder and Tim Fox.
Basketball
- The RHS girls' basketball team finished with a shoestring roster, but still managed to beat Wausau East in Wausau Jan. 24.
Sam Hoppe hurt her ankle in the first half and did not return, leaving the Lady Hodags with five players for the remainder of the game. Coach Mark Jacobson noted that two of the players finished the game with four fouls. Riley Aschenbrenner tallied 18 points for the Lady Hodags and was a big factor on the glass.
"We learned on the fly how to play smart on defense," he said. "I do believe every girl scored and they broke the full court pressure very effectively to get a lot of nice open looks. I really enjoy working with this bunch."
- The RHS freshman boys' basketball team lost to Lakeland 43-37 on Jan. 19 at the Central Intermediate School gym. Mason Shallow paced the Hodags with 14 points. Cole Oettinger had eight and Isaac Wendt had seven.
Gymnastics
- The RHS JV gymnasts defeated Mosinee 60.375-29.65 Jan. 23 in a Great Northern Conference triangular at Chequamegon High School. Chequamegon did not field any JV entries.
The Hodags fared well despite some of their JV members moving up to varsity to fill some holes in the lineup. Freshman Stephanie Allen, in addition to her varsity vault victory, took first on the JV floor exercise with a score of 6.95 points and on the uneven bars (4.35). Alyssa Ellis won the JV vault (7.1) and was second to Allen on the floor exercise (6.25). Brianna Hageny took second on JV vault (6.7), Sara Krueger was the runner-up on JV uneven bars (3.65), Ashley Puza finished third on JV balance beam (3.65) and Autumn Jankowski finished third on JV vault (6.4).
Alpine skiing
- Rhinelander's JV boys' Alpine ski team finished first Jan. 23 at the Northern Ski League's race at Christie Mountain in Bruce. Duncan Seidel had the best individual finish for the Hodag JVs, placing third overall with a second place finish in super giant slalom, a third in giant slalom and a fifth in slalom. Tyler Scheuermann was sixth on the day, T.J. Fritz finished seventh and Alec Effinger and Zach Harder each tied for ninth.
In JV boys' snowboard, the Hodags finished second as a team. Jorgen Tessman finished second overall. Quintin Triplett took third place.
Hockey
- The Rhinelander Ice Association's Squirt B team was swept in a doubleheader by Price Ice (Park Falls) Jan. 22. The Hodags dropped game one, 6-3, and game two, 6-5. In the first game, Harrison Shinners had a goal and an assist. Teagan Guckenberg and Jared Arno also had goals. In the second game Jakob Losch had two goals and a helper. Shinners, Guckenberg and Payton Johnson also scored. Johnson made five saves in game one. Joe Schneider had 24 stops in game two.
- Rhinelander's Peewee A team placed third in its pool over the weekend in a tournament at the Rhinelander Ice Arena. The Hodags defeated Amery 2-1, but lost to Reedsburg and Black River Falls.
