Today marks the season-opening event for the Northern Vintage Snowmobile Race Series. The locally-based series will hold its kick off the 2012 campaign with an ice oval race at the Stella Town Hall.

In its eighth year of existence, the NVSRS, attracts roughly 130 riders who compete in 22 different classes of racing, mainly for sleds model year 1985 and older.

"It's a great way to get out there and look at some of the old sleds people bring out," Jan Breivogel, NVSRS president, said. "They make some of them look brand new. They're all polished up and painted. Anybody that's a snowmobile enthusiast at all should come out, take a walk through (the pits) and see what's out there."

The race is hosted by the Stella Fire Department and begins a six-race series of ice oval competitions to determine the 2012 champions. The series will also run at Sugar Camp (Jan. 28), Pelican Lake (Feb. 4) Spirit Lake in Three Lakes (Feb. 18), Boom Lake in Rhinelander (March 3) and again at Sugar Camp (March 10). In addition, the series will hold two non-points paying endurance races on the Moen Lake chain (Feb. 11) and on Spirit Lake (March 17).

The majority of the racers in the series are from the area many compete in multiple classes. Racing gets underway with heats at 11 a.m. and will continue throughout the day until the feature races are complete, usually near dusk.

"It's free of charge (for spectators) and all the hosts have some means of food and beverage availabilities," Breivogel said. "Some of them even have a little dance afterward. It's a full day."

With a forecasted high temperature in the upper 20s and relatively light winds, spectators should be treated to favorable viewing conditions today.

"We've got some nice weather coming up for Stella and it's January," Breivogel added. "Normally this time of year, it ain't pretty out there. I would have to say that this would definitely be one of the races to come to if you're a spectator."

Check out our upcoming Winter Times magazine, a free publication that will be published Jan. 20, for a feature story on the NVSRS. For more information on the series, visit its website, www.nvsrs.org.
